I’m a Des Moines, Iowa native with nearly two decades in local and regional journalism. Currently, I am the associate editor of Jacksonville Today, the digital news arm of Northeast Florida’s NPR affiliate WJCT News 89.9 FM. My focus is Jacksonville City Hall and the Florida Legislature. 

Previously, I led three Iowa newsrooms. For my work in rural Iowa, I earned the Iowa Newspaper Association’s top investigative reporting award in 2014, and was named Young Iowa Journalist of the Year in 2015. I am a graduate of the University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communication (Go Hawks!). 

During my first five years in Florida, I served as a reporter and associate editor of government affairs at the Jacksonville Daily Record. 

I twice won Florida Press Association TaxWatch Awards for my in-depth city budget coverage and analysis. My work at the Daily Record also included reporting on Downtown development, the city’s public utility, and its independent authorities. I’m also a contributor to WJCT’s First Coast Connect and formerly to WJXT Channel 4-News4Jax. 

I'm currently developing my conversational Spanish skills to support multilingual community reporting.  

My wife Betsy and I live in the “Ancient City,” St. Augustine, Florida with our 10-year-old Vizsla and baby Cattle Dog mix.
